Her parents made sure she was getting dance lessons, and she took classes at the Santa Monica Playhouse when she was a kid. The actress began acting when was invited to play a character on the TV drama Party of Five in the year 1996. After being accepted into New York University by Kate Hudson, her goal was to pursue a career in show business, but not pursue the degree. After appearing in a handful of small films and a few short films, she was offered the role that would become her first major role in the field. She was cast as Penny Lane in the comedy drama film Almost Famous. The film didn't do very well in the box office however it was praised by review from critics.
