Nadia Elena Comaneci
Her name gained the attention of everyone when she gave the world one of the most memorable moment in sports history by scoring the world's first perfect 10 on bars that were symmetrical during the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976. And, to top it off she scored another six perfect 10s making her the youngest overall Olympic gold medalist at just 14 years old. Nadia Comaneci was able at attracting international attention to aid in helping Romania get its place on the world map. With a score that was not possible and a sporting legend, she brought gymnastics into the spotlight of the world's attention. This has also changed attitudes of the public towards female athletes. Her performance during the Olympics is significant enough that her toe move (toe-on) as well as her release move are both named for her. They are both considered extremely difficult movements. In addition to the Olympics, she showed remarkable performance in her participation in the World Championships and European Championships and was subsequently the living legend of her time in the sport and amongst the top-rated gymnasts the world could ever have. She also modeled and promoted the sport of gymnastics after making the move into the US.
